Perhaps they will blame a chemical attack on Iran or some uprising must be squelched. In that event they won't even slow down at the border to get their passports checked after they have flattened Iraq.

The world as we know it is about to be irrevocably changed, and not for the better.

When do we take France? wink.gif

I can't believe Russia and China would allow that. Goodbye, Taiwan.

Careful what you say, public support would probably be behind that. I doubt it'll happen though, since France's most-abundant natural resource is snooty waiters -- and they could never earn enough tips to pay for the cost of the war.

You can only hope Chinese leaders are as incompetent as Bush to use force to solve Taiwan issue. As Sun Zi said, you don't need a war to force victory. It's funny that Bush said not long ago he would seek a UN vote regardless of result. Now everyone on TV says he has done everything right. I may be the one insane.

One common thread about the administrations broad strategy is that there are two camps. One thinks Iraq is a stand alone case and buys into the new domino theory. Once we make Iraq happy and democratic then other nations in the region will follow. The other theory with lots of adherents, so they say, is the kick the hornets nest school. Supposedly this school want bring on chaos in the whole region so we can move against it.

So, getting to Iran, I would say the hornets nest school wants to fight Iran. (Never mind that it is democratic, to a large degree, only the mullas have a sort of veto power and more importantly hold many high level positions from which to execute their policies, without legislatve or even executive oversight (One might find an analogy for this in America now)) Some neocon wag said last year, everyone wants to go to Bahgdad, real men want to go to Tehran.

I fimly believe the hornets nest school exists and is in charge. A perfect example of the hornets nest players in action was when Sharon launched his campaign a couple of years back by going to a famous Mosque in Jerulselm and causing a riot and starting the current uprising. A perfect strategey.

It should be noted that Iran is arming Iraqi Shite's in the south and has developed fighting units from dissident Iraqis living in Iran. Iran is of course Shia and the Sunni minority rules Iraq thru Saddams Bath party. There is alot of water that has passed under that bridge over the years and anarchy and revenge could spread thru many cities as Shites, many possibly with Iranian sympathies, launch reprisals against the Sunni minority.

Iran also has issues in the north and might even be tempted to move their own troups there in the probabe chaos involving the Kurds and Turks and who knows who else. With the possibitly of conflict between troops of Iran and us one can assume a war footing could arise. The hornets nest crowd would love this, so I think.

How we are going to fight Iran I have no clue. Their military is certainly more potent than Iraq's and politically and culturally they are light years more united than Saddam's Iraq. A war there would be a real war, not this silly fake one we are going to launch now. Nukes however springs to mind as a strategy. In fact it does in Iraq too. Goodby Bahgdand and lots of problems are solved. (The above is irresposible paranoia, I know)

If we CONTROL mid east oil we have a powerful check on China in the future. Nuff said?

I met a frenchman in a field last night
he was out there with an easel painting carnival light.
he said, "I used to paint the Princess, I used to paint the frogs.
Now I paint moustaches on dangerous dogs.
Sometimes it's a country
Sometimes it's a girl
you know everybody got to have a purpose in this world
You Yankees are so silly about matters of the heart
Don't you know that women are the only works of art?"

(Chorus)
And you're drivin' with your eyes closed
you're drivin' with your eyes closed
you're drivin' with your eyes closed
and you're gonna hit somethin'
but that's the way it goes

some guys were born to ramble
some guys breathe bubble air
Some guys just got to go and put their rockets everywhere

you can breed 'em by the thousands
you can check 'em, you can train
just look at all those poor dogs that are dragged down by the Seine

How many arrows must I shoot into the blue?
ahh you little maniac, I'm crazy over you

so before the death of lovers and the punishment of pride
Let's go scrape on the Terrazzo, it's just too hot outside.

(Chorus)

(just listen to me..
talk talk talk'n talk
talk talk sweet talk
talk talk tough talk
talk talk [unintellegible] talk
talk talk walk 'n talk
talk talk me talk
talk talk baby talk
kiss kiss
kiss me baby)

( talk talk talk'n talk
talk talk smooth talk
talk talk muddy talk
talk talk back talk
talk talk small talk
talk talk heavy talk
talk talk peace talk
talk talk bull shit)

— Don Henley, Drivin’ With Your Eyes Closed, from Building the Perfect Beast

Unabonkers, I can name that tune in 4 notes. Track 10 -- used to love that CD.

Dunno if you've got Henley's most recent CD ("Inside Job") but I think the lyrics on "Workin' It" are absolutely spot-on:

Ah, it's open season here my friend
It always is; it always has been
Welcome, welcome to the U.S.A.
We're partying fools in the autumn of our heyday
And though we're running out of everything
We can't afford to quit
Before this binge is over
We've got to squeeze off one more hit
We're workin' it
Workin' it

Soon you will be dancing face-to-face
With the limits of ambition and the scars of the marketplace
Welcome to the land of flame and fizz
Where you will learn that packaging is all that heaven is

We got the little black car, the little black dress
We got the guru and the trainer in a full-court press
We got the software, hard drive, CD-ROM
We got the exploitation dot com
We got the pager, cell phone, bootleg methaqualone
The media, the message: you are what you own
We got the agent, lawyer, lapdog, voyeur
Talk show, book deal, round mouth, square meal

We're so busy covering our asses, we just can't commit
We say, “Oh, back off, don't bother me, baby
Can't you see I'm workin' it”
Workin' it

It's plain to see Miss Liberty has not yet come of age
But, she loves to feed the animals as long as they're locked up in the cage
And everybody knows the girl's got balls of brass...
Aw, kiss my ass

(Solo)

We've got a whole new class of opiates
To blunt the stench of discontent
In these corporation nation-states
Where the loudest live to trample on the least
They say it's just the predatory nature of the beast

But, the barons in the balcony are laughing
And pointing to the pit
They say, “Aw look, they've grown accustomed to the smell
Yeah, people love that shit
And we're workin' it.”
Workin' it

We got the short-term gain, the long-term mess
We got the suffocating, quarterly consciousness
Yes man, run like a thief

New York to Hollywood, hype and glory
Special effects, no story
Yes man, run like a thief

Workin' it
Workin' it

Well, you don't know who the enemy is
You don't know
You don't know who the enemy is

Ah, company man
“Eight for me, one for you”
(Workin' it)
“Very fair”
Business as usual, business as usual
Unabonkers
Prtzl, we agree on Don Henley…the man can pen a tune.

At the risk of turning this part of the board into a text-based version of Star Search, or American Idol, here’s another number that’s relevant for the times.

The second last paragraph is particularly relevant for recent weeks.

"Union Sundown"
Bob Dylan

Well, my shoes, they comes from Singapore
My flashlight's from Taiwan
My tablecloth's from Malayisia
My belt buckle's from the Amazon
You know, this shirt I wear comes from the Philippines
And the car I drive is a Chevrolet
It was put together down in Argentina
By a guy making thirty cents a day.

Well, it's sundown on the union
And what's made in the USA
Sure was a good idea
'Til greed got in the way.

Well, this silk dress is from Hong Kong
And the pearls are from Japan
Well, the dog collar's from India
And the flower pot's from Pakistan
All the furniture it said "Made in Brazil"
Where a woman, she slaved for sure
Bringing home thirty cents a day to a family of twelve
You know, that's a lot of money to her.

Well, it's sundown on the union
And what's made in the USA
Sure was a good idea
'Til greed got in the way.

Well, you know, lots of people complaining that there is no work
I say, "Why you say that for
When nothing you got is US made ?"
They don't make nothing here no more
You know, capitalism is above the law
It say, "it don't count 'less it sells"
When it costs too much to build it at home
You just build it cheaper someplace else.

Well, it's sundown on the union
And what's made in the USA
Sure was a good idea
'Til greed got in the way.
Well, the job that you used to have
They gave it to somebody down in El Salvador
The unions are big business, friend
And they're going out like a dinosaur
They used to grow food in Kansas
Now they want to grow it on the moon and eat it raw
I can see the day coming when even your home garden
Is gonna be against the law.

Well, it's sundown on the union
And what's made in the USA
Sure was a good idea
'Til greed got in the way.

Democracy don't rule the world
You'd better get that in your head
This world is ruled by violence
But I guess that's better left unsaid
From Broadway to the Milky Way
That's a lot of territory indeed
And a man's gonna do what he has to do
When he's got a hungry mouth to feed.

Well, it's sundown on the union
And what's made in the USA
Sure was a good idea
'Til greed got in the way.

Although the point may seem transparent with the lyrics, Ol’ Bob left the listener the option of interpreting this as an attack on big business or big labor — or both. Considering the US labor movement played a role taming unions overseas, with predictable consequences later, it’s a nice bit of duality.

Anyone for starting a new topic on favorite protest/political songs….?

Didn't solve the mess in Afghanistan, made things worse in Iraq. Draft is on the way to sustain the sabre rattling in re Iran.
