Full Version: Draft prisoners?

Maybe everyone's getting their knickers in a twist over nothing. Perhaps the nation's prisons will be emptied of non violent drug "offenders", to stuff into the gaping mouth of expanding Middle Eastern war. There are hundreds of thousands of prisoners who are more than capable and it's not without precedent. But here's a question. What form will their service take? As contract mercenaries of Kellogg Brown and Root, or will they work directly for the army. If Bushco gets in, I see the military becoming even more coopted by corporate concerns, so I'll go with the former. With Kerry, probably more direct govt control.

This article indicates that this has been considered and abandoned within the last decade. But this was at a time when the nation wasn't at war. Given a choice between drafting Joe 6pack's kids and destroying their constituent base, or sending prisoners, the choice is clear. There is no way any politician is going to propose an inclusive draft without exhausting all other possibilities. They'll just frame it as a really good deal for prisoners. A win win situation. Prisoners can work off their sentences serving their country. And hey, it might beat telemarketing.

But private industry isn't the only sector eager to exploit cheap prison labor. On June 14, 1995, the U.S. House of Representatives narrowly rejected an amendment to the 1996 Defense Authorization bill which would have permitted the Defense Department to use nonviolent offender inmates provided by state or local corrections facilities to do construction and maintenance services at military installations.

Threadbare,

Thanks for the link; very thought-provoking. I'm struck by the apparent "nice way that prisoners are treated" in terms of "being provided something useful to do: Take credit card numbers for TWA." ohmy.gif

My reason for posting is to simply take a broad view of the issue--I'm struck how the prisoners seem to be given "something useful to do", while the general public is harassed.

My rhetorical question: "Why are prisoners treated better in prison [with repsect, given the "trust" to take credit card numbers], while the general public [when it comes into contact with law enforcement] is treated with suspicion, disdain, and arrogance?"

I'm not suggesting that prison is a country club; but I am somewhat amazed at the apparent contrast in how prisoners and civilians are treated. The proverbial applecart seems upside down.

The government need not be surprised why there is a lack of support for public policies and actions. If prisoners are drafted into the military, that will make more space for non-offender-civilians to be put away. The prisons will be screaming for more inmates as the "hoped-for-cashflows" fall below targets.

9-11 and the Patriot Act promise to be unpleasant messengers: "Put up with our abuse--either way you'lleventually end up going to the front. Volunteer now; if you resist, we'll find an excuse to throw you in prison, and then you're going to the front anyway."

Joseph Satlin's Gulags never quite faded from memory.

Yep,US prisons are just another tentacle of bigbiz.Intended purely for profit, there will be much complaining and lobbying if the cash flow dries up.The govermwnt must undertake to arrest as many as are being lost to the army or compensate us!
