If any of your friends come up to you and tell you that the draft might come back, here's what you do:

1. Feign becoming upset.

2. State "I would never vote for ANYONE in a political party that would bring back the draft!"

3. Engage them in a conversation in the topic - get them riled up.

4. Get them to agree that bringing back the draft is a bad idea and that whatever party is sponsoring it should not be running the Government.

5. After they agree, say "We need to do some research, to see what individuals are sponsoring legislation to bring back the draft - and vote everyone in that party out of office!"

6. Walk over to the computer and go to the House of Representatives website http://www.house.gov and look up HR 163 "Reinstate Draft Bill" and while you're doing it with your liberal friend, mumble under your breath "I can't believe these dirty politicians want to bring back the draft - we need to get rid of those guys who are sponsoring it".

7. Act VERY surprised when you look up the sponsor of the bill. "Oh my gosh... it's not a Republican, it's Charlie Rangel, a Democrat!"

8. Look up the co-sponsors, "Oh my gosh... they're ALL Democrats - all 14 of them!!".

9. Say, "Well, let's see what the Senate has to say on this". Go to the Senate website http://www.senate.gov and look up S89 "Reinstate Draft Bill".

10. Say, "We need to vote these guys out too!" Act surprised when you find the sponsor of the bill is Fritz Hollings - a Democrat!

11. Look at your lib friend and say, "We agreed, we need to vote out the party that is trying to bring back the draft - so we have to vote out all the Democrats".

It's true Rangle and liberal Dems brought this as a bit of provocation. Good politics I suppose, well it would be if anyone paid any attention but they don't.

In any case the draft is a done deal. Bush I suppose will be asked about this eventually, something I was saying a year ago but in any case he will be asked and he will hint at a no. Then later it will go thru.

Kerry thru Edwards said no draft, not that it matters because he won't be president.

The thing is they don't need a lot of bodies, at first that is. And they don't want bottom rung grunts. How they accomplish getting tech savy draftees will be interesting to watch.

Now in comming years a lot more troops will be needed. A general build up will be necessary as threats increase, both external and internal.

Yeah, come on all of you, big strong men,
Uncle Sam needs your help again.
He's got himself in a terrible jam
Way down yonder in Vietnam
So put down your books and pick up a gun,
We're gonna have a whole lotta fun.

And it's one, two, three,
What are we fighting for ?
Don't ask me, I don't give a damn,
Next stop is Vietnam;
And it's five, six, seven,
Open up the pearly gates,
Well there ain't no time to wonder why,
Whoopee! we're all gonna die.

Well, come on generals, let's move fast;
Your big chance has come at last.
Gotta go out and get those reds —
The only good commie is the one who's dead
And you know that peace can only be won
When we've blown 'em all to kingdom come.

And it's one, two, three,
What are we fighting for ?
Don't ask me, I don't give a damn,
Next stop is Vietnam;
And it's five, six, seven,
Open up the pearly gates,
Well there ain't no time to wonder why
Whoopee! we're all gonna die.

Huh!

Well, come on Wall Street, don't move slow,
Why man, this is war au-go-go.
There's plenty good money to be made
By supplying the Army with the tools of the trade,
Just hope and pray that if they drop the bomb,
They drop it on the Viet Cong.

And it's one, two, three,
What are we fighting for ?
Don't ask me, I don't give a damn,
Next stop is Vietnam.
And it's five, six, seven,
Open up the pearly gates,
Well there ain't no time to wonder why
Whoopee! we're all gonna die.

Well, come on mothers throughout the land,
Pack your boys off to Vietnam.
Come on fathers, don't hesitate,
Send 'em off before it's too late.
Be the first one on your block
To have your boy come home in a box.

And it's one, two, three
What are we fighting for ?
Don't ask me, I don't give a damn,
Next stop is Vietnam.
And it's five, six, seven,
Open up the pearly gates,
Well there ain't no time to wonder why,
Whoopee! we're all gonna die.

I don't get it.

What's the fuss??

I always liked a draft better than a bottle anyway.

Heck, I once killed a six-pack just to see it die.

Vote for the party that thinks poor kids are better cannon fodder than rich kids. Vote Bush. Is that what you are trying to say? sad.gif

So Arlo Guthrie, after describing what he did to stumble his way out of the Draft suggests:

And friends, somewhere in Washington enshrined in some little folder, is a study in black and white of my fingerprints. And the only reason I'm singing you this song now is cause you may know somebody in a similar situation, or you may be in a similar situation, and if your in a situation like that there's only one thing you can do and that's walk into the shrink wherever you are ,just walk in say "Shrink, You can get anything you want, at Alice's restaurant.". And walk out. You know, if one person, just one person does it they may think he's really sick and they won't take him. And if two people, two people do it, in harmony, they may think they're both faggots and they won't take either of them. And three people do it, three, can you imagine, three people walking in singin a bar of Alice's Restaurant and walking out. They may think it's an organization. And can you, can you imagine fifty people a day,I said fifty people a day walking in singin a bar of Alice's Restaurant and walking out. And friends they may thinks it's a movement.
And that's what it is , the Alice's Restaurant Anti-Massacre Movement, and all you got to do to join is sing it the next time it come's around on the guitar. With feeling. So we'll wait for it to come around on the guitar, here and sing it when it does. Here it comes.

You can get anything you want, at Alice's Restaurant
You can get anything you want, at Alice's Restaurant
Walk right in it's around the back
Just a half a mile from the railroad track
You can get anything you want, at Alice's Restaurant

That was horrible. If you want to end war and stuff you got to sing loud. I've been singing this song now for twenty five minutes. I could sing it for another twenty five minutes. I'm not proud... or tired.

There's no doubt in my mind that the draft will eventually be instituted ...but not for a while; these guys have to put the finishing touches on WWIII first.

The INTERESTING thing is this. The legislation for the draft was written entirely by "Democrats". What Republican in his right mind would write legislation for something as unpopular as the draft in an election year? Even the stupid ones know better.

Anyway, because the Repulicans are so pro war; preemtive stike etc and all the talk is about how short we are of personnel and how the boys in the field are having to stay on for extra terms.....most people ASSUMED that the legislation had republican backing.

The net result? More new people have registered to vote this time around than in any prior election. And who are a lot of these new voters...college kids who are terrified about the draft. But who do you think they are going to vote for......NOT Bush...not Republicans.

This seems to have been a ploy by the Democrats. They knew everyone would assume the legislation was being pushed through by the war mongering Republicans. Brilliant move!

PS The House voted down the legislation something like 420 to 2 this week; so the draft issue is on the back, back burner until the next terrorist attack.
