Da bullz charged into open but sellers were waiting. All Ords currently -0.2% and it's the usual two sectors getting thunked. Materials down the most, -1.6% followed by Energy, -1%. Utilities is up the most, +0.8%.
BHP and RIO are revisiting a support area: BHP -2.2% and RIO -1.2%. In the golds, Newcrest is up for a change, +1.5% but Lihir and Newmont are in the red.
Oils are down on low volume.
Another mixed day in Asia with minor gains or losses at this stage.

NYSE Buys Euronext Forming First Transatlantic Market June 1 (Bloomberg) -- NYSE Group Inc. agreed to buy Euronext NV for 7.78 billion euros ($9.96 billion), forming the first transatlantic stock exchange and edging out a rival bid by Deutsche Boerse AG.
NYSE Euronext, as the combined company will be called, would unite the 214-year-old New York Stock Exchange with bourses in Paris, Amsterdam, Brussels and Lisbon and Europe's second-largest futures market. The new exchange will handle about $2.1 trillion in stock trades a month, twice as much as Nasdaq Stock Market Inc.

A bit of a loop-da-loop which brought us back into positive territory with All Ords closing +0.3%. Utilities steamed higher, +2.1% and Energy was the reddest, albeit off the lows, -0.8%.
Miners generally improved throughout the day. BHP finished down a mere 0.6% and RIO -0.5%. In the golds, Lihir did a dramatic turnaround to close +2.5%, Newcrest did the reverse, going from up to down, -2.1% and Newmont finished +0.7%.
Oils remained mixed: Woodside flat, Santos -1.1% and Caltex +0.2%.
A bit of a rocket ride in Asia although China, -0.9%, failed to join in. Nikkers +1.8% and India/Taiwan +1.3%.

Look who's been reading the stool:
"Hedge funds have created a "major risk" to global financial stability for which there are no obvious remedies, the European Central Bank warned on Thursday in one of the bluntest official statements yet on the rapidly growing sector.
In a clear hint of rising official nervousness about the multi-billion-dollar industry, the ECB ranked an "idiosyncratic collapse of a key hedge fund or a cluster of smaller funds" in the same category as a possible bird flu pandemic as the types of shocks that could trigger fresh disruption in financial markets.
"
no link to full article possible
Is it a hint to the FED and BOJ's "save all the hedge funds and their multibillion dollar participants with taxpayer's money"?
Comparing hedge funds going under with a pandemic where people die in the millions is a bit off; not very sensible IMO.

I would be a bit carefull. If there is a stock rally today than it may be very a "one day wonder". Rates do rise since many many months, during that time we had sometimes not so good economic data, other times we got very good data, but during that whole time period rates did rise. Why should they stop rising, only because we got a bit disappointing data today?

The government numbers are all fill numbers. If they need a rally in an investment catagory then this is how they do it. Bonds were in trouble so a great employment miss today saves them. At the same time the spin is the rate hikes are over so stocks rally. What BS. I remember in Jan. of 2001 we had the first decrease in rates... market rallied then preceded to fall apart. I think the gap and crap scenario is correct. It feels the financial markets are are more communistic than the Soviet Union ever was....
