Marking time once again. All Ords flat with a sprinkling of unenthusiastic green sectors. Financials is up the most, +0.4% and at the other end, Consumer Staples is the reddest, -1.7%.

In the miners, RIO is up there, +1.8% but BHP flat. The golds are all down on lightish volume.

Oils mixed: Woodside -2.2% and Santos +0.4%.

Not much happening in Asia either, small gains/losses.

Brazil Cuts Benchmark Rate to 13.75% to Spur Economy

Oct. 18 (Bloomberg) -- Brazil's central bank cut the benchmark lending rate a half percentage point in an unanimous vote after 10 straight reductions have failed to stimulate economic growth.

Policy makers voted unanimously cut the overnight interbank rate to 13.75 percent, as expected by 23 of 25 economists surveyed by Bloomberg. Central bankers have slashed the benchmark rate 6 percentage points since September 2005. The bank set no bias in favor or raising or cutting rates in future decisions.

China's Economic Growth Slows on Investment Controls

Oct. 19 (Bloomberg) -- China's economic growth slowed last quarter from the fastest pace in more than a decade as Premier Wen Jiabao curbed investment.

Gross domestic product in the three months ended Sept. 30 increased 10.4 percent from a year earlier, compared with 11.3 percent in the second quarter, the statistics bureau said in Beijing today. It was the first slowdown in a year.

China's soaring trade surplus has flooded the world's fourth-largest economy with cash, funding an investment binge that may result in idle factories and bankruptcies. Foreign exchange reserves have surged to almost $1 trillion, fueled by exports that the U.S. and Europe say are unfairly supported by an undervalued currency.

Australian Household Debt Reaches Record, Central Bank Says

Oct. 19 (Bloomberg) -- Australian households debt reached a record in the second quarter, the central bank said today.

Australians' debt to disposable income ratio climbed 3.2 percentage points to a record 156.9 percent, and has doubled in just over eight years. The proportion of income consumed by interest payments is a record 11.4 percent, and also twice as high as eight years ago.

The Reserve Bank of Australia has raised borrowing costs twice this year, and most economists predict another increase next month. House prices have surged more than 30 percent in the past four years, forcing people to take out larger loans. Central bank chief Glenn Stevens last month said record household borrowing created risks that the bank was unsure how to evaluate.

``How households will behave under conditions of greater macroeconomic stress, which surely will one day occur, we cannot yet know,'' he said in a speech on Sept. 15.

In case Big Doo Doo didn't see my late-night M2M response to his post re BIOM:

I have no idea why it was up so much -- 8% during the trading day and another 12% blink.gif after hours. No news to explain it.

But I'll be glad to see that trend continue. biggrin.gif

EDIT: I just looked at money flow. It's improved dramatically of late. My guess is: someone knows sumpin'

One big sideways move for the last 5 days (not to mention the last 5 months). A couple of the indicators showing bearish divergences so things may start to get interesting. All Ords did a late day plunge to close -0.5%. Only one sector closed green, Healthcare, +0.1%. Consumer Staples led at the red end, -2.5%.

The miners lost ground: BHP -1% and RIO off its morning highs, +1.1%. Not too much good news in the golds either: Lihir -2.5%, Newmont -2.6% and Newcrest -1.1%.

In the oils, Woodside -2.6% and Santos flat.

Asia mixed...

In the midst of the celebration re: Dow 12,000, here's a chart of the inflation-adjusted Dow. Whoops, it's not at a record high. It's just barely retraced half of the prior bear market's decline. We saw a similar pattern of nominal Dow highs but lower real Dow peaks from 1966 through 1972 prior to the big market drop.

Great idea. But lousy execution. They're very, very late and competing technologies
for high-speed non-volatile memory are in development. I read up on the technology
and it's a great concept but they should have had real, usable products by now by

From DJ Newswires--

"This reduction reflects a strategic shift in our balance sheet strategy to hold lower securities," de Molina [BAC CFO] said during a conference call with analysts to discuss third-quarter earnings.

De Molina didn't specify what type of securities the bank plans to sell. He said the pace and timing of the planned securities sales will hinge on the direction of interest rates and the economy.

De Molina said that selling the securities will "provide additional capacity for loans."
