An interesting session in the US but here it's still dull and boring with All Ords -0.2%. Most sectors are down to some degree with Energy down the most, -1.6%. Out of the three greens, Consumer Staples is up the most, +0.3%.

Miners are generally down: BHP -0.3% and RIO -0.6%. In the golds, Newcrest is flat with the others in the red.

The oils are also down: Woodside -1.5% and Santos -0.5%.

Another round trip day although I have to say the action was quite bullish. All Ords closed flat with Energy retaining the downside lead, -2% followed by Telecom -1.3%. Quite a few sectors were green albeit none with huge gains: Consumer Staples and Financials +0.5% and Utilities +0.4%.

In the miners, BHP managed to crawl back into the green, +0.2% and RIO finished -0.3%. The golds: Newcrest +0.4%, Newmont -0.7% and Lihir -1.4%.

Oils were firmly down: Woodside -2.1% and Santos -1.4%.

Asia is mixed ranging from China +1.9% to Sth Korea -1.7%.

Jan. 19 (Bloomberg) -- McDonald's Corp. said half of its 100 new restaurants in China in 2007 will be drive-through outlets, in a move to catch up with Yum! Brands Inc's KFC unit in selling fast food to the world's fastest-growing vehicle market.

McDonald's golden arches signage will be seen at 30 Sinopec gas stations in eastern China in the next 18 months, while the remaining 20 will be linked to other retail chains, the company said.

Switzerland, Foreign Millionaires' `Paradise,' May Raise Taxes

Jan. 19 (Bloomberg) -- Switzerland, which has attracted millionaires from Ikea founder Ingvar Kamprad to ex-Formula One champion Michael Schumacher, may raise taxes on rich foreigners after French singer Johnny Hallyday's move to the Alpine nation sparked criticism on both sides of the Franco-Swiss border.

Foreigners with no local income pay tax according to their spending on rents or mortgages. Finance ministers from the country's 26 regions will meet today in Bern to discuss revising the system, said Kurt Stalder, who oversees the conference. If approved, taxation on 3,600 residents could more than double.

Foreclosure lists near 1989 record

Adjustable-rate loans and consumer debt are blamed

08:08 AM CST on Friday, January 19, 2007

By STEVE BROWN / The Dallas Morning News

Dallas-Fort Worth home foreclosure postings are still growing – fueled by higher payments on adjustable-rate loans and rising consumer debt.

The latest statistics show that pending foreclosures in Dallas County are 12 percent higher than a year ago and foreclosure postings are up 16 percent in Tarrant County.

Its not that surprising to see this bit of strength this morning based on how the stock futures were trading last night after IBM's earnings, they were barely below FV.

Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac still have huge financial problems, regulator says

By Marcy Gordon
ASSOCIATED PRESS

2:30 p.m. January 18, 2007

WASHINGTON – Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac have made progress toward correcting financial weaknesses, but tight government supervision is needed as the mortgage giants emerge from accounting scandals, a federal regulator said Thursday.
James B. Lockhart, director of the Office of Federal Housing Enterprise Oversight, also disclosed that Fannie Mae, which just last month announced a restatement of $6.3 billion in profit for 2001 through mid-2004, had a loss in the third quarter of 2006. He did not specify the amount of the loss.

12MoDef -- hip hop for a U.S. housing bubble on the edge

HARRY KOZA

E-mail Harry Koza | Read Bio | Latest Columns
I've been flogging the U.S. housing bubble horse for several weeks now and was planning to rant about oil this week for a change, but then I saw the latest new wrinkle in mortgage financing and just couldn't let it slide.

I must say, I thought I'd seen it all; that just about every possible permutation of the stodgy old home mortgage had already been invented. I doubtless forgot for a moment that this is a market bubble and, as we bubble semioticians like to say, one of the surest signs of a market bubble is the fervid proliferation of strange and exotic new financial instruments. This is a time-tested maxim going all the way back to John Law's invention of the instalment receipt during the Mississippi Bubble in 1718. You could look it up -- it's a great story.

Ford exec grounded from corporate jet
Following outcry, Mark Fields, who heads Ford's money-losing North American operations, will fly commercial for weekend trips to see family in Florida.
By Chris Isidore, CNNMoney.com senior writer
January 18 2007: 2:35 PM EST

..."Suris would not comment on what class of commercial ticket Ford will buy for Fields. A check of Northwest Airlines' Web site shows the price of a round-trip first class seat between Detroit and Miami at $1,556, or about $90,000 for a full year.

The Ford proxy statement shows that Fields' use of the corporate jet for personal travel in 2005, when he was in the job for about three months, cost the company $214,479. Multiplying those costs by four to estimate the full-year expense comes to about $900,000. Suris would not say what the cost came to in 2006, although that will be reported on the company's proxy statement some time this Spring."...
