Most the miners took a tumble: BHP -1.2%, RIO -1.8% and the major golds finished down around a percent with the exception of Newmont, +0.4%.

Indonesia Resumes Cutting Key Rate as Inflation Slows

May 8 (Bloomberg) -- Indonesia's central bank resumed cutting its policy rate, to boost corporate and consumer spending, after inflation unexpectedly slowed last month and the rupiah surged.

Bank Indonesia Governor Burhanuddin Abdullah reduced the rate used as a reference for bill sales by a quarter point to 8.75 percent, the lowest since August 2005. The move was forecast by 16 of 19 economists surveyed by Bloomberg News. The central bank said it sees further room to reduce the measure.

Australia Retail Sales Rise 1.1% on Employment Boom

May 8 (Bloomberg) -- Australia's retail sales surged more than twice as much as economists expected in March, buoyed by rising employment and wages growth. The nation's currency gained.

Spending climbed 1.1 percent from February, the biggest increase in 11 months, the Bureau of Statistics said in Sydney today. The median estimate of 25 analysts by Bloomberg News was for a 0.5 percent rise.

Expectations among consumers that the central bank will refrain from adding to last year's three interest-rate increases has fueled spending at stores owned by David Jones Ltd. and Woolworths Ltd. The Reserve Bank last week forecast the slowest inflation rate in two years, providing room for Governor Glenn Stevens to leave borrowing costs unchanged in coming months.

Over at the America's Cup Challenge Races...

Larry ("I'm a Billionaire you MORON") Ellison's Team BMW Oracle is running hard against the Kiwi Boat (Emirates New Zealand), which appears to be in Top Form.

Appaently Ellison has threatened to buy New Zealand and sell it to China if the Kiwi Boat beats him

Cheaper to do that than building a new Boat.

THEY're trying to sell the idea of a Metal Bear market
"Metals Bubble Poised to Burst on Increasing Supplies (Update3)

By Millie Munshi"

Roach trying to lower Metal prices for his new Asian friends

" China's Rates

Roach anticipates a drop in commodities because China will increase interest rates to slow the economy and inflation, while a slowdown in U.S. housing will rein in consumer spending. "

Wake up and smell the B.S.

"``This is a real bubble,'' says metals trader David Threlkeld, who first got the world's attention in 1996 when he showed that Sumitomo Corp.'s copper hoarding would lead to a market collapse. Once again, ``we have an enormous amount of unsold copper,'' says Threlkeld, president of Resolved Inc. in Scottsdale, Arizona."

They're even trying to respin the Mr. Copper story!!?

Looking up David Threlkeld renders a Nov 2005 story on Gloomberg:

"Prices may rise another 9 percent this year, [b]before falling in 2006[b], as China is forced to make good on the trader's bets, said David Threlkeld, the first man to publicly allege in 1991 that a trader at Sumitomo Corp. was cornering the copper market."

Dead wrong, prices almost doubled in to the May '06 top

Sign o' the times......

The producer of the 1987 film "Wall Street" has reached an agreement with Fox to develop a sequel in which Gordon Gekko returns as a hedgetarian. Working title: "Money Never Sleeps."

The original starting filming in May 1987, exactly 20 years ago. It was released post-crash in December 1987.

Doubtful. Probably Hank "Pat" Paulson in his directorial debut. Although the title will probably be changed to "Bwa-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha" or "Can You Hear Me Now?"

I was reading about the Hunt's attempt to corner the silver market.....Could this be accomplished today? If one stayed out of the futures market and bought their silver from refiners, mints, or dealers. It seem that the Achilles heal was the massive corruption in the futures market. Please comment anyone...

Enlightening post-mortem on New Century from the WaPo today.

Interviews a staff appraiser who said that, when she denied a loan app based on the appraisal value, a couple of salesgoons would come walking thru her office banging a baseball bat on her desk and yelling, "You cut my [expletive] deal!".

She said her bosses would overrule her and find another appraiser who was more compliant (or who had a fear of baseball bats.)

Yet another example of Greenprint's "financial innovation" at work.

Not that it matters, but.....

"China's masses rise up and buy stocks"---Asia Times

"On April 26, some 325,000 new investor accounts were opened on one day, pushing the total to 92.5 million. One out of ever 14 mainland Chinese is now a player. This does not include those who trade in shares through investment funds. Considering that 80% of the population are farmers, it may be safe to say that almost ALL urban adults are stock investors or speculators."

"A civil servant in Guangzhou said 90% of his staff bought and sold shares, 'During the lunch break, all we talk about is stocks. I can make more money in a single day than my monthly salary."

"A taxi driver in Shanghai said driving a cab has became his "part-time" job, as his "full-time" work is to "speculate in shares". The taxi driver told a Chinese newspaper that he and his wife have a division of labor in the trade. His wife goes to an outlet of a securities brokerage house early in the morning on each trading day. He listens to the radio and give instructions to his wife by telephone to place orders."

"There is a general belief among Chinese investors that the government will refrain from taking harsh measures, especially in the run-up to the Beijing Olympics next year, to burst the bubble. The average price on A shares is over 40 times their earnings and much higher on B shares. As for individual shares, the P/E ratio is now as high as several thousand. Speculators say such shares are worth buying because the companies are expected to be taken over."

The riverboaters returned today from "Golden Week" holiday and jammed up the "B" shares indices another 9% but could only manage about 4% on the "A" share indices like the Shankhigh and Shenzhen. The Shankhigh B is up 94% YTD and the Shenzhen "A" is up 106%.
