China's Trade Surplus Climbs 23% to $19.5 Billion

Feb. 15 (Bloomberg) -- China's trade surplus jumped more than economists estimated in January, a sign that the world's fourth-biggest economy may keep powering global growth as a recession looms in the U.S.

The gap widened 23 percent from a year earlier to $19.5 billion, the customs bureau said on its Web site today. That was more than the $17 billion median estimate of 19 economists surveyed by Bloomberg News.

Overseas sales grew at the fastest pace in six months as higher export taxes and an appreciating yuan failed to damp demand. International Monetary Fund Managing Director Dominique Strauss-Kahn today reaffirmed a forecast that China's economy will expand 10 percent this year amid a spreading financial crisis sparked by the U.S. housing slump.

Indonesia's GDP Expands Near Fastest Pace in a Decade

Feb. 15 (Bloomberg) -- Indonesia, Southeast Asia's biggest economy, expanded near the fastest pace in 10 years as declining borrowing costs encouraged companies to invest and spurred consumer spending.

The $364 billion economy grew 6.25 percent in the three months ended Dec. 31 from a year earlier, after expanding 6.5 percent in the third quarter, the Central Statistics Bureau said today. That's less than the median 6.4 percent forecast of 16 economists surveyed by Bloomberg News.

European Car Sales Fall on Consumer Confidence, Taxes

New car registrations declined 0.3 percent from a year earlier to 1.31 million vehicles as ``the global credit crunch, impacting spending and confidence,'' weighed on demand, the Brussels-based European Automobile Manufacturers Association said today in a statement.

Purchases at Toyota, the world's second-largest carmaker, dropped 11 percent last month to 75,801 vehicles. The Toyota City, Japan-based carmaker's European market share declined to 5.8 percent from 6.5 percent.

European registrations by Detroit-based General Motors, the world's largest automaker, fell 8.1 percent to 124,219 vehicles, while its market share dropped to 9.5 percent from 10.3 percent. Dearborn, Michigan-based Ford Motor Co., which ranks third in European sales, posted a 3.5 percent slide to 141,572 vehicles, and its market share narrowed to 10.8 percent from 11.2 percent.

I've been using firefart for years. No problems at all with it. No difference in loading time. This site does load slower than a lot of sites. The pages are huge, and there are several third party servers involved, not to mention the coding is archaic. If it's too slow, and you are a registered user you can change the number of posts per page in your control panel. If you are just reading and not posting, you can use the fo-fiversion. Just click the link at the bottom of the page. You won't get all the charts graphs and pics though.

It's very flattering when people write to me or post comments over on the WSE asking me for my thoughts on analytical work produced by others. I'm glad that my opinion is valued that way, but unfortunately, I just don't have enough time to read anything, other than this board, of course. I came to the conclusion some time ago that critiquing the analyses of others is not a productive use of my time. If they agree with me, that's great, and if they don't, they're wrong. laugh.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif

I do apologize, but given my time commitments, I just can't do it. If you have read or seen something elsewhere that you would like my reaction on, feel free to post the gist of it here, and as always, I will try and give an off the cuff comment.

Just remember that I am usually 3 weeks, or 3 months, or 3 years ahead of everybody else. laugh.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif

But if they're any good, they'll catch up. wink.gif
DrStool

I understand the reasons why interest rates will go up eventually, but if this is a bear market and we have another leg down (or two, or three), as equities continue to sell off, isn't it reasonable to think that the flight to safety (I use that term loosely) will continue to drive yields down?

The bullish case for yields/bearish case for bonds is that a dearth of liquidity will cause bonds and stocks to tank together. And the high level of treasury borrowing is exaSSturbating that dearth.
