Most Gulf Workers Plan to Quit as Inflation Soars, Survey Says

Feb. 24 (Bloomberg) -- Two thirds of workers in Gulf states including Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates plan to change jobs this year as soaring living costs erode income, Arabian Business reported from its first regional salary survey.

In the U.A.E., 68 percent of workers are looking for another job, compared with 67 percent in Saudi Arabia, the Dubai-based magazine said in an e-mailed report today, citing data from a poll of 8,914 people across the Gulf Cooperation Council states.

About 32 percent of respondents said they want to change jobs to get a pay increase to meet the rising cost of food and rent, according to the report. Citizens of the Gulf states said lack of recognition at work is the main reason for them to seek new jobs.

GCC central banks are under pressure to change their pegs against the dollar as the U.S. currency declines, stoking inflation to record levels.

U.K. Hometrack House Prices Decline for a Fifth Month

Feb. 25 (Bloomberg) -- U.K. house prices dropped for a fifth month in February as banks curbed mortgages and buyers struggled to afford them, a report by Hometrack Ltd. showed.

The average cost of a home in England and Wales fell by 0.2 percent to 174,400 pounds ($343,000), the London-based research company said today. House prices increased an annual 1.4 percent, the least since April 2006.

Singapore Inflation Accelerates to Highest Since 1982

Feb. 25 (Bloomberg) -- Singapore's inflation accelerated in January at the fastest pace since 1982, increasing pressure on the central bank to allow its currency to appreciate further to damp rising import prices.

The consumer price index jumped 6.6 percent from a year earlier, after gaining 4.4 percent in December, the Department of Statistics said today. Economists had estimated a 5.6 percent increase. Prices rose 1.3 percent from December.

The Monetary Authority of Singapore this month increased its forecast for inflation in 2008, predicting consumer prices will gain at more than double last year's pace. The central bank has allowed the currency to climb to the strongest in 11 years amid government warnings there is a limit to the Singapore dollar's appreciation because it reduces competitiveness.

And I thought it was odd for the Spooz to close green on Friday because of a Crapvision spin.

Maybe Chinese markets aren't that manipulated after all... compared with western markits.

The close was just under Feb 1st low! We're back to Jul 07 prices on this bloated pig.

Gold Fields May Cut 6,900 Jobs on Power Restrictions

Feb. 25 (Bloomberg) -- Gold Fields Ltd., Africa's second- biggest gold producer, will eliminate as many as 6,900 jobs, or 13 percent of its South African workforce, as the state-run utility fails to provide enough power for the company's mines.

The cuts are the first by a South African mining company since generator Eskom Holdings Ltd. said power shortages will last for four years. Gold Fields will close part of its operations at Driefontein, Africa's largest gold mine, and redesign its South Deep mine, the company said today.

Production may fall as much as 20 percent, at a time when gold prices have never been higher and growth in demand for the metal from money managers is accelerating.

Edit: West Australia desperate for mining personnel, maybe we'll see a few more Sth Africans here in the near future... wink.gif

A comment from that countryslide article:

"People would have to use our preffered lender or lose their up to $25,000 incentive. You would not believe some of the people that were approved for loans. We wonder why there are so many foreclosures, with debt to income ratios of 50/100 and qualifying for 3 & 5 year arms was funny. I couldn't sleep at night any longer and left the business!"

... so what do you do with a currency pegged to the dooler that's causing record inflation?

The answer is obvious, you just start using doolers! Government statistics prove that we hardly have any inflation at all.

How can it be called a bailout if the banks that supposedly are going to recapitalize(?) the ailing insurer are non other than the insured ? Wouldn't it be necessary for a third party (FED) to step in with the dough? This sounds like a right pocket to left pocket operation right now, covering up a hole with another...

And btw I doubt the finanglers have the money to put into AMBAC, isn't that FED non-borrowed reserves chart telling us they have no money to capitalize themselves let alone other entities?

Yep, it seems that they rather recapitalize AMBAC then get a margin call on TAF collateral. TAF is not a laughing matter anymore...

The markets are so thin that draining another $17 bln out of other stocks will tank the market. Look at China today - down 4%, I think not a coincidence that they have a huge IPO today. There is no enough money to both IPO and the rest of the market

DJ Iran To Launch Higher Denomination Bank Note - AFP

TEHRAN (AFP)--Iran is to launch a new banknote twice the value of any other
note in circulation, the central bank head said Monday, amid double-digit
inflation.

"We hope the new 100,000 rial banknote (worth around $10) will be issued in
July," said the head of Iran's central bank, Thamasb Mazaheri, according to
the Mehr news agency.

The issuing of the IRR100,000 note comes after Iran issued a IRR50,000 note
in March, which carries motifs celebrating the controversial Iranian nuclear
drive. A 20,000 rial bill had been introduced in February 2004.

It is not clear what will be on the new note, but all the higher domination
notes in circulation in Iran bear the face of revolutionary founder Ayatollah
Ruhollah Khomeini.

I wish I could embed a poll on the openning screen on every computer in the world to vote, in a binding referendum, whether to send the top 5 leaders of each of the worlds countries to a devil's island where they could not leave and could all battle each other for the small resources, with camera's covering every sq.inch so we could all watch and laugh. Future cooperation between governments would be assured there after under threat of the same treatment for each new leader.
