Check this out. I went to log into Northern Trust and noticed this new message:

"Emergency Readiness
In the case of an emergency event you may call toll-free from anywhere in the U.S. to hear a recorded message about your Northern Trust office. Please call 1-800-682-0009, Northern Trust's Client Emergency Line, for updates and other relevant information."

WTF is that?
I called the number and this is an information hotline set-up to handle inquiries about “business interruptions” or “unusual conditions” at their branches. Call it for yourself and listen – it’s eerie.

I have been impressed by Northern Trust’s conservative lending practices and Paul Kasriel’s economic crystal ball. These guys have been way ahead of the curve in terms of economic forecasting and capital preservation. This kind of message says to me “we know what’s going on, and we’re getting prepared for what’s coming.” - Ominous, to say the least.

Nonetheless, this sure rattles my confidence. I’ll be stopping by tomorrow and repossessing another $50k (I’ve been doing this occasionally as this crisis escalates). Tomorrow’s withdrawal will be the last drain to get all accounts down to FDIC limits. After that I’ll just have to keep my fingers crossed and hope these guys haven’t screwed-up somehow.

So, does your bank have a systemic crisis hotline?
More importantly, does your bank have your money?

Peoples gits angry when they don't git their gov't freebies handouts.

(from jickiss's link above)

People grew agitated. Several fights broke out. Then an official came out of the housing authority building and announced through a megaphone that disabled people should come forward.

Instead, the entire crowd surged forward. dry.gif People fell down and were close to being trampled, witnesses said.

"That's when all hell broke loose," said Shannon Pierce, 26, of Lake Worth. Pierce, who is six months pregnant and had been waiting in line since 6 a.m. "We almost got trampled over."

Authorities decided to shut things down. "We think we handled it with restraint," said police spokeswoman Sandra Boonenberg. "We had good communication with the people, the crowd cooperated, and we avoided any negative issues. We were very pleased with the way it was done and that nobody get hurt."

Shayla Williams, 22, of West Palm Beach, was angered by the police tactics.
"This place is going to get shot up later," she yelled to officers. "They can't treat us like this."

People in the line said they came overnight, from as far away as Riviera Beach and Pahokee, to apply for the housing subsidy.

Interesting trend developing in Latam. First Colombia, and today Brazil, have put in place different measures aimed at curbing or restricting the inflow of dollars into the countries since the local currencies have been going gangbusters to the upside and have drawn the wrath of exporters. for sure, the suspense is building pressure behind the scenes....da General is asking what kind of inflation numbers will be released....Bubblevision carries stories about that failing Carlyle fund (NOT the Group, just a fund)....as others have observed, end of Quarter approaches.

as others have revealed, in all parts of the world, the doolar Weakness (others currencies are up, strong and appreciating) is a cause for Exporter alarm.

It seems again, to your jickiss, to be the Time to Trick. With the help of various key CBs, can not a Doolar Rally take place that will, for a short time, bull up the USA Broads, and, for once, push up Miners Shares more than any gold movement measured directly by the metal itself??

This happens if and only if a Stick Save for the Dog and for the INDU can get into motion in the NEXT 3 trading days. Will the Feed grant 100 bpts, and try to trigger an Expectations Elevation?

until short term money hits the ZERO line, why not? Such a surprise move could be justified by "Mounting Concerns" for the Real Estate Market or SomeSuch.

what to do???? just take a look at CSCO options page for the March Expiry. Some options are virtually free, for the first time in years....

Fake fears over Ethiopia's gold
By Elizabeth Blunt
BBC News, Addis Ababa

The price of real gold is currently soaring
Ethiopia's national bank has been told to inspect all the gold in its vaults to determine its authenticity.

It follows the discovery that some of the "gold" it had bought for millions of dollars was gold-plated steel.

Macquarie pushes up rates on low-doc loans

THE home loans arm of Macquarie Group has raised interest rates on some mortgages by almost three times as much as the latest official rise by the Reserve Bank, the biggest hit yet to home buyers as a result of the credit market meltdown.

And in another sign that the credit crunch has wiped out Macquarie from the home-lending business, the investment bank has started to redeploy staff within its mortgage division.

Macquarie will increase rates by 0.7 of a percentage point on its low-doc loans, offered to borrowers who don't have paperwork required for a standard variable mortgage, such as the self-employed.

Before the subprime crisis, Macquarie aggressively promoted its low-doc loans, offering some of the best rates available.

The increase doubles the maximum rate rise announced by the banks in response to the RBA's 0.25 percentage point rise last week, and is almost triple the official rate rise.

* Money laundering for trying to conceal the source and recipient of financial transactions.
* Tax evasion, if he was a knowing party to an all-cash business that wasn't filing taxes.
* Violation of the Mann Act for paying for the trip from New York to D.C. by the call girl known as "Kristen."
* Misuse of state resources, if he used his state-issued credit card for hotels or meals with prostitutes as well as if he was being protected by State Troopers during his dalliances.
* And finally, soliciting prostitution.

There's also the question of whether Spitzer used campaign funds for these trysts, which opens up a whole other litany of charges from fraud to federal election violations.

Court documents and published reports indicate perhaps as much as $80,000 were transferred from Spitzer's account to a trio of dummy companies that were fronts for the escort service.

North Fork Bank reportedly grew suspicious when the governor asked that his name be taken off the latest transactions.

this is one of the problems that will be resolved when the day of reckoning comes and goes.

Hedley's juggling act

It might sound a little old-fashioned but some investors must be yearning for the day when they owned shares in a company - a company without a stapled-security, a company with management in it, as opposed to outside it.

Such an ancient company might even be geared at 30% or 40% rather than 70% or 80% so that when interest rates went up it would not go under.

Investors would only have to remember one acronym. They could own the same shares as management, as well as the promotors and the founders, and everybody could go along for the ride safe in the knowledge that what was good for the company was good for all.

In the case of Queensland pub baron Tom Hedley, there are now three related corporate structures in a bit of bother.

There are Hedley's private business interests, which are yet to see the full light of day, and two publicly-listed entities: Hedley Leisure and Gaming (HLG) and National Leisure and Gaming (NLG). HLG owns pubs and gaming licenses which it leases to assorted tenants, one of which is NLG.

City Pacific stalls for time on unit funds

THE besieged Queensland property group City Pacific is stringing out more than 10,000 unit holders waiting for interest payments, with its largest unlisted mortgage fund continuing to stall on the payment of a monthly distribution.

Making a mockery of City Pacific's protests that the $1 billion First Mortgage Fund has been functioning "normally", the company is now up to 10 days late in distributing a monthly interest payment that many of its deposit holders — mainly retirees — are awaiting.

After promising to deposit money into unit holders' bank accounts last Friday and then Monday, today is crunch day.

Providing more discomfort to its unit holders, the City Pacific customer hotline only offered a phone message in response to calls yesterday.

chart masturbation. it might not predict a thing.

in 2000, the SPX 1380 level was analogous (but not perfectly so) to our current 1400 line. from may 2000 to early feb 2001 (nine months), it served as both support and resistance. for the past seven months, 1400 has served as contemporary support and resistance.

after the march 2000 highs, the first lower closing low below 1380 opened up a more than four-month entertainment zone between 1254 and 1438. within it, there was a sub-entertainment zone of 1310 to 1380/90.

at present, we've had only two months of sub-1400 revelry. the chart could break down at any time, but history suggests we could ping-pong in the current 1270-1400 zone for many weeks yet. and this chart of yore suggests we could break above and below that zone without altering the longer-term trajectory of the bear finding its way to fresh bull meat.

Obviously more to it. No doubt a double-cross-power-play-end-run behind it, no doubt the whole thing a pile of shit from stem to stern, just like everything else. No good guy anywhere, but for this brief moment, whatever the deeper story might be, at least a clear bad guy.

So the public will revel in a moment of spasmodic indignation and high-falutin moral outrage, a nostalgic ejaculation of puritanism from a bygone time, before returning, snorting and oinking, to its cesspool of Dr-Philandering mediocre hypocrisy and decrepitude.

They'll tune in to their "Spitzer Cam" and get their "Eliot Capsules" and cry about it on Oprah and write really flat but sincere letters to the editor of their local rags, and there will be animated consensuses savored at Friday night family dinners across the world tomorrow. Boring husbands like me will enjoy a little smidge of "wadn't me" with the wife, and dads will shake their heads sagely at the corruption at the top and how it never changes. And the BAREister will drink his mint juleps and whitey will still be on the moon and they'll still smoke behind the 7-11 and it all goes on and on...
