Todd Hamilton after years of play in Japan breaks through on the golf scene with the win at the 2004 British Open after a 4 hole playoff with Ernie Els. He has been playing the same set of legendary Mizuno TN-87 miura forged irons. People rave about these cult irons. Here is a special look up close of Todd's irons.

I know they are pretty old but it still seems amazing that Mizuno would have Miura forge their irons. That wedge is looking pretty worn out!

Man, those irons have absolutely NO offset. I don't think I could hit that 3-iron if I tried. How worn and scratched up is his PW!

His swing looks really nice, but it looks funny when he has his head up before he hits the ball. Maybe I should try and I might become a pro smile.gif

How hot is it over there in America. I know it's Summer and stuff there but his pants are soaked!

Great pics Richard good.gif

Edit: I got mixed up on the area code wink.gif

Great pics, thanks for sharing! I love the look of those irons but there is no way I would want to play with them.

TN87s have a bit of offset.

The Japanese design of having them in the short irons more than in the longer irons is in the TN87s. Very little kind of like the 03 RAC CBs.

There are still new ones over here that I see every so often with the Precison stepped shafts in 5.5 or DGS200s. Tempting but not in my abilities whatsoever.

I love Todd Hamilton for keeping it old school.

The last time I saw pics he was using 690.MB's and he won the Open Championship using
MP-33's. Interesting to see him go back to something older than those two!

Grat pic's of his swing!

I notice how much he de-lofts the the iron with the wrists prior to impact ?

Is this normal ?

I heard of the story

TN means Tanaka or Tanabe... a japanese who nearly won the Masters, 2nd place. in 87 thus TN-87. So mizuno made it to remember him

He nearly won it another time...

He's turning his head w/ his torso, not "lifting"- that would mess with his spine angle. Annika and Duvall both do this, and Ogilvy to a lesser extent. It allows for a freer rotation through the ball and less strain on the back. Plus, the ball isn't going anywhere b/w your backswing and impact right?

Those are GREAT pics of the clubs- any idea how old that particular set of irons is? I know someone said they were made to commemorate the 87 masters, but is it possilbe that those irons (forged, and probably soft) lasted 20 years of beating by a touring pro (a lot of time on the course, a lot of time on the range)? Probably replaced them a few times along the way, right?

TN= Tommy Nakajima

WOW, those things are trashed.
LYG
TN 87...Tommy Nakajima designed them in 1987.

Faldo and many others used them in the late 1980's and early 1990's.

Tomm Nakajima got a big royalty ($100+) for each set sold in Japan...they decided NOT to sell them in the US and branded almost the same blade as the "MP 29."..Tiger used for a few years, among others. Sold in the US for 7 or 8 years, replaced by the MP 37 (very similar, perhaps still available on custom order) and then MP 33.

I play these awesome TN *& clubs. One other feature is the copper underlay...you can see it in the Todd Hamilton club close ups.

Hard to find a set...I was lucky to get a set via this web site...after blue printed by Joe Kwok, are an AWESOME set of clubs.

Thanks, Lawson

Todd Hamilton is a joke. I saw him at Scandinavian Masters 06. I followed him for two holes and left laughing... he shanked 2 chips.. so he chipped 3 times on one hole. next hole i does a nice miss the ball in the bunker shot..... +5 in two holes... but, everyone can have a bad day....

And you've won how many major championships? Yeah, that's what I thought... rolleyes.gif

Just because he has not enjoyed a Tiger-Level of success after winning the British Open does not mean he is not a great golfer. Give the guy abreak, everyone has a bad day on the course. I actually really like Todd Hamilton.
